Father's Day has an interesting history that dates back to the early 20th century. It is widely believed that the celebration originated thanks to a woman named Sonora Louise Smart of Washington State in the USA.
After her mother died while giving birth to her sixth child, Sonora's father raised the family on his own. Inspired by his dedication, Sonora felt that fathers deserved recognition too. In 1909, after hearing a church sermon about Mother's Day, she began campaigning for a special day to honour fathers.
Several local clergymen supported her idea, and it is believed that the first unofficial Father's Day was celebrated on 19 June 1910. More than 50 years later, in 1966, US President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed that Father's Day should be observed on the third Sunday in June. Six years later, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it an official national holiday.
Today, Father's Day continues to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June, with families coming together to show appreciation for the fathers and father figures in their lives.
